Action Centre Update


We would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the status of the Action Centre. As of right now,   the Action Centre’s contract will be ending at the end of April.  Having said this we are looking into the possibility of a contract extension but we have no official word as to whether there will be an extension and if so, how long it will be.

We feel that it would be in everyone’s best interest to take full advantage of the services the Action Centre has to offer before the end of April in anticipation of the contract ending.

Below is a reminder of the services available at the Action Centre.

Tuesday

Training Councellor

  • The training counsillor will work with clients interested in upgrading their skills or changing careers
  • She will also help you get all required documentation in preparation to meet VPI to submit an application for training funding
  • If you are not sure what direction you would like to go in the counsellor is more than happy to discuss your options with you

Wednesday

Employer Targeting

  • The Employer targeting counsellor will be working with clients individually and in groups as part of our Job readiness programme to ensure our clients learn how to target employers,how to get organized,how to plan their job search activities etc.
  • She will also help you use some of the research tools available to you here at the Action Centre

Thursday

Resume writer

  • The resume writer will see clients to help them with their resume development, targeting resumes foe specific employers and jobs
  • She will also help in the development of an effective cover letter
  • You should develop more than one resume with the resume writer You may be trying to find work in manufacturing , but at the same time looking for a job in another field

VPI

  • The assessor from VPI will be doing initial assessments
  • He will go through the application process with you and submit the application to MTCU

In response to the changes in Second Career that were announced by MTCU the Action Centre has made some procedural changes. Any client that is interested in training will meet with the assessor from VPI to go through the Suitability and Eligibility Matrix before they start to do any research to see if they meet the new criteria. A client who does meet the new criteria will be referred to the Training counsellor who will assist the client in completing the necessary documents. When they have obtained and completed all the the required documents, the client then meets with the VPI assessor again to finalize the Second Career application process.

Employer Outreach Program – Job Readiness

imagesWe understand that job searching can be very frustrating and we are committed to helping you to look for work,but we are equally committed to making sure you are job ready.

We have expanded our services to a more comprehensive Job Readiness and Employer Targeting Program which will include an Employer Outreach Program. We have had 59 workers sign up for the Employer Outreach Program and will start sending out the marketing packages to perspective employers in the near future.

We are using a two level approach to help you with your job search efforts

We are helping you as a group

  • Employer Outreach Program – The objective of this program is to research and contact employers that are hiring and send them a marketing packaging with resumes from workers in transition who have been utilizing the Action Centre. We will be working hard to promote the skills you have to offer them and opening opportunities for interviews and jobs.
  • Targeting Employers Workshop – This two part workshop is designed to help workers make a plan for their job search efforts including
  1. What to consider when targeting employerscareer planning
  2. Putting together a list of preferred employers
  3. How to get organized
  4. Planning your week
  5. Websites for targeting employers
  6. Using Scotts Directory

We are helping you as an individual

  • Resume writer to help target your resume
  1. To a specific type of job
  2. Type of industry
  3. A specific job posting
  • Counsillor to meet with clients one on one to help target employers and focus your job search efforts.
  • Job Board in the Action Centre and on our website focused on the jobs that appeal to the type of work you are searching for

Job Readiness

We are helping you to be job ready by providing you with a number of workshops that will give you the skills needed to be successful in your job search as well as as prepare you for the interview process.

  • Introduction to Computers
  • Indroduction to MS Word
  • Introduction to the Internet
  • Targeting Employers
  • Interview Skills Workshop/ Mock Interviews
  • Employer testing Workshop
